Botox / Xeomin (Pricing at Bottom of Page)

Q: How is receiving Botox different at Honolulu Dermatology?
A: Our board certified dermatologist performs an in-depth consultation prior to your Botox injections to determine how to best meet your goals. This consultation is included in the price of the Botox injections and during this consultation the dermatologist can address any other medical or cosmetic dermatology issues. All Botox injections at Honolulu Dermatology are performed by Amber Gill MD, a board certified dermatologist who has several years of formal training and extensive experience with Botox injections.

Q: Should I shop for Botox by price?
A: Each person’s needs when it comes to the injection points and amount of Botox is completely different. Dr. Gill has treated thousands of patients with Botox and with that experience comes the ability to customize where and how much Botox to inject for each unique patient. The same number of units injected by someone with less experience and skill may have inferior results. In addition, other injectors may over-dilute their Botox or charge for units that are lost within the Botox bottle/syringe. Honolulu Dermatology only charges for the number of units actually injected in each patient at the manufacturer’s recommended dilution.

Q: What is BOTOX / Xeomin?
A: BOTOX and Xeomin are brand names of neurotoxins that Dr. Gill uses with her patients and can be collectively referred to as botulinum toxin therapy. Jeuveau and Dysport are other brand names that she does not generally use. They are made by different companies, but have the same active ingredient, botulinum toxin A. They are all effective and relatively comparable in onset, duration and price. Xeomin, unlike BOTOX and Dysport, has no added proteins and has a theoretical benefit of less antibody formation.

Q: What is botulinum toxin therapy used for?
A: Dermatologists use botulinum toxin therapy to diminish or prevent signs of aging. Botulinum toxin therapy helps relax the muscles on the forehead, between the eyebrows and around the eyes to smooth frown lines and crow's feet. Botulinum toxin therapy can also be used to treat jaw clenching and a medical condition called hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating).

Q: How does botulinum toxin therapy work?
A: Botulinum toxin binds to and blocks the signals from the nerves to prevent muscles from contracting. This allows wrinkles to relax and soften over time. Results generally continue to improve over several sessions.

Q: What is the "down-time" with botulinum toxin therapy?
A: Most people can return to their normal activities immediately after treatment.

Q: How long does it take to see full results?
A: Botulinum toxin generally takes effect in 7-10 days, though results often continue to improve over time.

Q: Is botulinum toxin therapy permanent?
A: No. Results last an average of 3 months. Muscle action gradually returns and the lines begin to reappear if treatment is not repeated.

Q: Is getting botulinum toxin therapy safe?
A: Botulinum toxin therapy is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), however, like all procedures, there are risks and possible complications. The most common side effect is temporary bruising. Rarely, patients may experience headaches or eyelid drooping. It is important to ask about the amount and type of formal training the injector has in administering botulinum toxin therapy and in dealing with adverse outcomes.

Q: Is botulinum toxin therapy covered by insurance?
A: Botulinum toxin therapy is not covered by insurance when used for cosmetic purposes, but may be covered for sweating and other medical conditions.
